I applied a pop culture perspective to create these memes. Both memes require knowledge of pop culture and recent events in order to be comprehensible. I created one meme that would have a broad audience (everyone has heard of Taylor Swift) and one that may be a bit more niche (Kinder eggs). These are both topics that have been memed before, but not paired with these specific memes to my knowledge.
The new framework for Sue Sylvester is as follows. The content has changed drastically. Instead of creating a toxic environment, the meme now refers to a popular song from Taylor Swift, a play on the title ‘Blank Space’. The form has not changed much in this remix. It is still a single person sitting behind a desk with text beneath. However, part of the text has been blacked out and replaced, and Sue now has the hairstyle that Taylor had in the music video for Blank Space. The stance still has ironic keying, but the communicate function has changed from poetic to referential, since it is referring to a specific outside source (Taylor Swift’s discography).
The new framework for DW is as follows. The meme has maintained its original content of feeling left out and jealous. Kinder surprise eggs are banned in the US but not elsewhere, but I personally love them and miss eating them with my cousins in Europe. The form has also stayed the same as before, with one person facing the object of their desire, in this case the eggs. The stance has changed from metalingual to referential. It requires outside knowledge of what Kinder eggs are as well as the fact that they are banned in the US.
